New Year, Same(ish) Me, But Better!

Here we are again, a brand new year and a brand new chance to convince ourselves we’re going to totally crush it this time! Okay, confession time “New Year, New Me” used to be my go-to motto… until I realized January 1st was just a Tuesday in fancier clothes. But hey, let’s talk about those resolutions. They’re the ultimate January tradition. I’ve made all the classics: “Get fit!” “Save money!” “Learn Italian

because apparently, I’m moving to Tuscany now?”

This year (well last year) I decided to get a head start. Yup, I’ve been hitting the gym regularly for months and even started working with a trainer. Why? Because waiting until the ball drops to start something is like signing up for failure with a side of regret. Now that I’m not starting from scratch, my resolutions are less “get off the couch” and more “level up.” Kinda like realistic resolutions with a side of grace. Instead of writing a list that feels like a punishment, I’m focusing on goals that excite me or at least don’t make me want to cry. Here’s what I’m aiming for this year:

  1. Crank up the weights: I’ve been showing up to the gym but now it’s time to lift heavier and prove to myself that I’m secretly a superhero. (insert dramatic cape toss)

  2. Own the treadmill: My Peloton bike already has me in a chokehold but I want to push myself to go longer, faster, and maybe not hate every minute of this treadmill. Aiming to add on 2 more 5k's this year.

  3. Eat like I care: Less junk, more real food, and fewer excuses to order pizza just because it’s Tuesday.

  4. Misty January: I’m not quite committed to a dry January but It’s time for a little detox. Not forever, but long enough to remind myself what mornings feel like without the fog.

  5. Prioritize joy: Whether it’s spending more time with loved ones, trying a new hobby, or simply slowing down to savor a great meal, I want to lean into moments that make me happy.

  6. Do things that make me laugh: Life’s too short to be serious all the time. Whether it’s bingeing ridiculous TV, hanging out with friends, or trying a new hobby that I’ll inevitably be bad at, I’m here for the giggles.

Look, resolutions aren’t about reinventing yourself, they’re about fine-tuning the awesome person you already are. Whether your goals are big (run a marathon) or small (drink more water), what matters is making progress that feels good to you. No matter what those goals are, remember to take baby steps. Big goals are cute and all, but little wins deserve a round of applause too. Some days, just putting on real pants is a victory. Also, don’t quit just because you mess up. Let’s face it, perfection is overrated. Progress is where it’s at, even if it’s slow and involves a few detours (and snacks).

Resolutions are personal, and no two lists will look the same. Maybe yours includes hitting a fitness milestone, taking the leap into a new career, or learning how to make the perfect homemade pasta. Whatever it is, remember you’ve got a whole year to work toward it. Let’s keep it real. it’s okay if your “new me” looks suspiciously like the old one, just with a little extra effort and a lot more self-love. As we step into 2025, I hope we all find the courage to chase what sets our souls on fire. Here’s to new beginnings, fresh perspectives, and the chance to make this year our best yet.
